    Fried Cabbage Recipe

Jump to Recipe Jump to Video Print Recipe

This Fried Cabbage Recipe is a traditional Irish dish with a flavor almost as deep as Its history. I recommend pairing with Bangers and Mash for an authentic comfort food meal. The flavors and textures work so perfectly together. Which I suppose is why it's been served this way for so long.

    How to make Fried Cabbage

Begin by prepping all of your ingredients. I always like to be as prepared as possible when preparing dinner for the family and even more when we have company.

Start by measuring out all of your ingredients and setting them aside.

    Ingredients

The ingredients for this Fried Cabbage recipe are straightforward. Most of which you'll already have, making it a very inexpensive yet impressive side for so many different meals.

    All you'll need is:

    • Thick Cut Bacon
    • Small Yellow or White Onion
    • Green Cabbage
    • Dark Brown Sugar
    • Worcestershire Sauce
    • Kosher Salt
    • Black Pepper

    How to Fry Cabbage

Once your ingredients are all measured, heat a 12" Cast Iron Skillet over medium-high heat and begin frying the bacon.

While the bacon is frying, prepare the Cabbage by removing the core and slicing it into thin strips.

Set the sliced cabbage strips aside and dice the onion.

Once the bacon has fully cooked, remove the strips from the skillet and place them on a cooling rack over a paper towel-lined baking sheet. This will help the bacon crisp up even more while the grease drains off.

Now, Reduce the heat to medium and add the diced onion to the skillet, sauté until they begin turning translucent.

Next, begin adding and sweating down the Cabbage until the whole head has been placed Into the skillet. Be sure to stir the Cabbage somewhat frequently to ensure an even cook.

While the Cabbage is frying, slice or cut the bacon into bits and add it back to the skillet. I like cooking shears to cut the bacon, but a sharp kitchen knife also works.

Lastly, add the remaining ingredients, stir to incorporate, reduce heat to medium-low and sauté until the Cabbage has fully wilted down but isn't mushy.

How do you cut Cabbage for frying?

Core the head of Cabbage, meaning cut the hard base off, then quarter the cabbage head by slicing it in half, then in half a gain. Press each part down a bit to be sure it doesn't slide around, and then cut it diagonally into even strips.

How long should you cook Cabbage?

Cook your fried Cabbage for 10-15 minutes on Medium heat.

This will provide a nice texture to the fried Cabbage without it becoming mushy. That said, everyone's stovetops or heating elements are different. So the best way to be sure you've fried the Cabbage long enough is by tasting it. Never be afraid to taste the dishes you're cooking. It's the only real way to know.

What goes well with fried Cabbage?

Cabbage is incredible, especially when it's fried like in this recipe. Pairing it with Bangers and Mash, Irish Stew Pot Pie, or Grilled Salmon Skewers are all perfect combinations.

However, don't limit yourself to just dinners. I highly recommend taking Corned Beef Hash to another level by topping crispy air-fried potatoes with fried Cabbage, then slow-cooked Corned Beef Brisket, and top it all off with a couple of over-easy eggs.

Now that would be a fantastic comfort food brunch!

    In Conclusion

Fried Cabbage is extremely easy and affordable to make and packs a big punch of comfort food flavors.

If you're cooking for a large crowd, you may even want to consider cooking it on an outdoor griddle like a Blackstone. You can fit a lot of Cabbage on one of those bad boys!
