Jump to Recipe Jump to Video Print Recipe

Few desserts feel more comforting than a warm Southern Peach Cobbler fresh out of a cast-iron skillet. Sweet peaches baked beneath a buttery golden crust create the kind of old-fashioned dessert that instantly feels like summer, holidays, and family gatherings all rolled into one.

This Southern-style peach cobbler keeps things rustic and simple by leaving the peach skins on, which adds beautiful color, extra texture, and even more homemade flavor to every bite. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the ultimate Southern dessert.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

This Southern Peach Cobbler recipe is buttery, rich, and loaded with fresh peach flavor. Baking it in a cast iron skillet gives the cobbler crispy golden edges while the peaches soften into a sweet, syrupy filling underneath.

Unlike overly polished bakery-style cobblers, this recipe leans into a more rustic Southern approach by keeping the peach skins on. The skins soften beautifully while baking and add extra texture, color, and homemade character to the dessert.

    Ingredients

Southern peach cobbler ingredients labeled and laid out on a wooden table.

    For the Peach Filling

    • Fresh Peaches – Sweet fresh peaches become soft and syrupy while baking.
    • Granulated Sugar – Sweetens the filling and helps create the cobbler syrup.
    • Dark Brown Sugar – Adds deeper caramel-like sweetness and richness.
    • Ground Cinnamon – Brings warm Southern dessert flavor.
    • Nutmeg – Adds subtle warmth and spice.
    • Orange Juice – Brightens the peach flavor and balances the sweetness.

    For the Cobbler Batter

    • All-Purpose Flour – Forms the base of the buttery cobbler topping.
    • Unsalted Butter – Adds richness and helps create crispy golden edges.
    • Baking Powder – Helps the batter rise while baking.
    • Kosher Salt – Balances the sweetness and enhances flavor.
    • Whole Milk – Keeps the cobbler tender and rich.
    • Vanilla Extract – Adds warm homemade dessert flavor.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

A peach being sliced on a wood cutting board.

Step 1. Wash and Slice the Peaches

Begin by washing and slicing the peaches, then place them into a mixing bowl.

I like to leave the skin on because it adds extra texture and color to the cobbler.

Just make sure to remove the pits.

Peach cobbler seasoning spread over fresh peaches in a glass mixing bowl.

Step 2. Prepare the Cobbler Filling

Next, add the brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and orange juice to the peaches.

Stir everything together until the peaches are fully coated, then set the bowl aside.

As the peaches rest, the sugar starts pulling out their natural juices, which helps create that rich syrupy filling while the cobbler bakes.

Step 3. Preheat the Skillet and Butter

Now add a stick of unsalted butter to a 9-inch cast-iron skillet.

Place the skillet into the oven and preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing the butter to fully melt as the skillet heats up.

    This step is important.

That hot butter and cast iron help create those crispy golden edges around the cobbler.

Step 4. Mix the Cobbler Batter

While the oven preheats, whisk together the flour, white sugar, kosher salt, and baking powder in a mixing bowl.

Then pour in the milk and vanilla extract and whisk until everything is fully combined and smooth.

You want the batter fully mixed, but don’t overwork it.

    Step 5. Prebake the Batter

Now carefully remove the hot skillet from the oven and pour the batter directly into the melted butter.

    And don’t stir it.

That separation between the butter and batter is what helps create the cobbler texture as it bakes.

Place the skillet back into the oven and bake the batter for about 5 minutes.

This gives the bottom layer a head start before adding the peaches.

Step 6. Combine the Cobbler and Bake

Now remove the skillet from the oven and spoon the peaches and all of their juices evenly across the top.

    Again, don’t stir it.

Just gently place the peaches where you want them and pour the juices over the top.

As the cobbler bakes, the batter rises up around the peaches on its own.

Bake the peach cobbler for about 30 to 40 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden brown.

Once baking is complete, remove the cobbler from the oven and let it rest for about 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

    Expert Tips

    • Leaving the peach skins on adds texture and beautiful color to the cobbler.
    • Cast iron creates the best crispy golden edges.
    • Fresh ripe peaches work best for flavor and texture.
    • Let the cobbler cool slightly before serving so the filling can thicken.
    • Vanilla ice cream melts perfectly into the warm peach filling.

What to Serve with Southern Peach Cobbler

Southern Peach Cobbler is the perfect ending to a classic comfort food dinner. Serve it after hearty Southern favorites like Chicken Fried Steak with Cream Gravy, Southern Smothered Pork Chops, barbecue, or a backyard cookout spread. And of course, a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top never hurts.

This cobbler is especially perfect for summer cookouts, holidays, and family gatherings.
