    Shrimp Toast

Jump to Recipe Jump to Video Print Recipe

Shrimp Toast has always been one of my favorite appetizers. Visually, it makes you want to try it, especially when it's plated creatively. Texturally, it's crunchy and soft without being too sharp (if you know what I mean) or mushy. The flavor of the shrimp really shines through, and paired with a sweet and spicy sauce, you have a full package. It's really one of the best Chinese food appetizers out there.

All in all...A good Shrimp Toast Recipe provides a well-rounded light appetizer that just about everyone will enjoy.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

This shrimp toast is easy to make, not too bad on cleanup, and extremely impressive in its flavor profile and plating ability. It makes the perfect appetizer for all Asian dinners or to serve at a party!

It's typically served as an appetizer along with some dip. However, if you're looking for a main dish to accompany it, try out this Easy Chicken Mei Fun Recipe.

    Ingredients

For this shrimp toast, I used Texas toast, oil for frying, shrimp, imitation crab, yellow onion, green onion, garlic, egg, fresh parsley, sesame oil, kosher salt, black pepper, and soy sauce.

See the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Egg being poured into a cooking blender.

Step 1: Place the shrimp, imitation crab, yellow and green onions, garlic, egg, parsley, sesame oil, salt, pepper, and soy sauce in a food processor or blender and give it a few good pulses.

Set the mixture aside and grab your bread.

A piece of shrimp toast frying in oil.

Step 2: Cut the crust off the bread and then cut each slice diagonally, making two triangles out of each slice just like you would if you were making a Cheese Frenchee Sandwich.

Heat about 2 inches of cooking oil over medium-high heat in a Dutch oven or large cast iron skillet.

Once the oil is hot, spread one side of a triangle with the shrimp paste mixture and place that side down in the oil. Fry that side for about a minute or until golden brown. Using a wire cooking skimmer, flip and repeat on the backside.

Carefully remove the shrimp toast from the oil and place it on a cooling rack set above a baking sheet. (See Expert Tips)

Serve your shrimp toast hot and drizzled with your favorite spicy sauce or dipping sauce on the side.

    Expert Tips

    • Place the shrimp toast on a wired cooling rack! Don't place these on paper towels. There is too much oil, and you'll end up with super greasy shrimp toast that won't be very crispy.
    • If you don't have a blender, you can use a hand-powered or electric food processor to make the shrimp paste.
