Shrimp Toast has always been one of my favorite appetizers. Visually, it makes you want to try it, especially when it's plated creatively. Texturally, it's crunchy and soft without being too sharp (if you know what I mean) or mushy. The flavor of the shrimp really shines through and paired with a sweet or spicy sauce you have a full package. All in all...A good Shrimp Toast Recipe provides a well-rounded light appetizer that just about everyone will enjoy.
What is Shrimp Toast
Shrimp Toast is a Chinese fusion dish that began in Guangzhou, China, and is popular in Hong Kong as well as many Americanized Chinese restaurants.
It's typically served as an appetizer along with some sort of dip.
What is in Shrimp Toast
Like many other recipes, the ingredients of shrimp toast differ from one recipe to another. However, the idea is pretty much always the same. A base of white bread with a smear of shrimp paste. Some of the more traditional recipes will use sesame seeds as a topping, while others will use bread crumbs or nothing at all.
While shrimp paste may sound a bit intimidating it's actually very easy to make.
Let's jump right!
Ingredients
For this shrimp toast, I used Texas toast white bread, oil for frying, shrimp, imitation crab, yellow onion, green onion, garlic, egg, fresh parsley, sesame oil, kosher salt, black pepper, and soy sauce.
How to Make Shrimp Toast
The first step is making the shrimp paste. This is as simple as placing the shrimp, imitation crab, yellow and green onions, garlic, egg, parsley, sesame oil, salt, pepper, and soy sauce in a food processor or blender and giving it a few good pulses.
Set the mixture aside and grab your bread. Begin by cutting the crust off of the bread and then cut each slice diagonally making two triangles out of each slice.
Heat about 2 inches of cooking oil over medium-high heat in a dutch oven or large cast iron skillet.
Once the oil is hot spread one side of a triangle with the shrimp paste mixture and place that side down in the oil. Fry that side for about a minute or until golden brown. Using a wire cooking skimmer flip and repeat on the back side.
Carefully remove the shrimp toast from the oil and place it on a cooling rack set above a baking sheet. This is very important! DON'T place these on paper towels. There is too much oil and you'll end up with super greasy shrimp toast that won't be very crispy. Trust me on this...I learned the hard way.
Serve your shrimp toast hot and drizzled with your favorite spicy sauce or with a dipping sauce on the side.
In Conclusion
Shrimp Toast can be made in many different variations, in fact, there are a couple of other ideas I have to tweaking this recipe in the future. So stay tuned for those other options. In the meantime, let us know in the comments how this turned out for you and if you made any changes that took it to a whole new level.
Thank you so much for visiting Chicken Fried Kitchen and trying this recipe!
As usual...
