Jump to Recipe Jump to Video Print Recipe

This Italian-style Butter Board Recipe uses amazing garlic butter, fresh rosemary, radishes, and freshly grated parmesan cheese. I took inspiration from Justine Doiron's Creation over at justinesnacks.com. When I first saw her TikTok video, I had to try it!

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

This charcuterie-style Butter Board is a beautiful appetizer that can be made for small and large crowds alike. Plus, you can be as creative as your mind will allow. A butter board is a charcuterie board with softened butter spread on top and garnished with various toppings. You can make them sweet, savory, or even citrusy. I've also seen some other creative home chefs make peanut butter boards.

    Ingredients

Butter: For this board, I used my own garlic butter recipe. If you don't want to use garlic butter, then plain room-temperature softened butter will work fine. If you plan on sprinkling your butter with any salt, you may want to use unsalted butter.

Seasonings, Spices, and Herbs: A light sprinkle of freshly ground pink Himalayan salt is perfect and adds a nice color to the overall presentation. In addition, I also used fresh rosemary and left the leaves whole, sparingly placing them over the butter.

Additional Ingredients: A little lemon juice, freshly shredded parmesan cheese, and freshly sliced radishes add a fresh flavor and a wonderful pop of color.

See the recipe card below for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Garlic butter being spread on a live edge wood serving board.

Step 1: Begin by spreading the butter in rows across the board. If you plan on serving bread on the same board, you'll want to fill about half the board with butter.

Shredded cheese being added to garlic butter spread on a wood serving tray.

Step 2: Next, zest a whole lemon evenly over the top of the butter.

Now sprinkle coarse pink salt over all of the butter. Not too heavy, though, as you don't want it to be too salty.

Shred a generous amount of fresh parmesan over the entire top of the butterboard.

Cheesy garlic butter spread being topped with freshly sliced radishes and fresh rosemary.

Step 3: Lastly, scatter the fresh rosemary leaves across the butter and evenly place the thinly sliced radishes to ensure almost every bite will have a slice.

Step 4: Serve the butterboard with sliced baguette or any other bread you prefer.

    Expert Tips

    • If you plan on sprinkling any salt over your board, you may want to consider using unsalted butter.
    • Place the sticks in a butter dish the night before to soften the butter. By the following day, the butter will be ready to spread.
    • Ensure that each guest has enough butter spreaders to keep their own to avoid dipping directly in the butter or, even worse, double-dipping.

    Recipe FAQs

What is the point of a butter board?

Butter boards are no different than charcuterie boards. They are designed to bring people together and make a dish more interactive, all while being served in a family-style presentation. Plus, a butter board is so customizable that the possibilities in flavors and presentation are endless.

What would you use to eat your butter board?

I recommend a toasted French Baguette, Italian bread, and assorted crackers. However, you can get very creative with this. Think about serving an Italian herb butter board with a French baguette and grilled steak bites or smoked salmon.

How do you soften butter for a butter board?

Leave your butter stick out in a butter jar overnight. The next day, it will be ready to mix or spread.

    Do butter boards stain?

If you use a wooden board for your butter board, purchase a food-safe treated wood serving board, not a raw wooden cutting board. Then you won't have to concern yourself with stains and clean up will be much easier.
